Eddie & The Hot Rods were formed by teenagers Steve Nicol and Barrie Masters in 1975 in a sleepy town just outside Southend called Rochford. Guitarist Dave Higgs was quickly recruited followed by Lew Lewis on Harmonica and Paul Gray on bass.
After a time playing the London Pub Rock circuit where they often had a certain Joe Strummer and his band the 101ers as support band they were scouted by Island Records and signed to the label in 1976 , Lew Lewis was then fired by the label.
Eddie& the HotRods are credited as being the first UK band to be labelled Punk by the music press and in the long hot summer of 1976 they went head to head with ACDC to see who could sell out the most consecutive nights at Londons Marquee Club, Eddie & the HotRods won the battle but safe to say ACDC won the war.
A sell out show at Londons Rainbow Theatre, with Ultravox as support saw the fans rip seats out as excitement spilled over, they returned the following year where they had a little known band called Squeeze support them on their 1977 Sell Out UK Tour. In France they were the first ‘Punk’ band to feature on National TV and later appeared at the famous Mont De Marson Punk Festival.
Their first tour of the USA saw them opening for The Ramones, they toured extensively all over America alongside The Police, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Wishbone Ash ,Talking Heads and even Chuck Berry.
They had 4 top forty UK hit singles including a Song called Do Anything You Wanna Do which sat in the top 10 for the whole summer of 1977 selling 475,000 copies. They also recorded the albums Teenage Depression ,the title track was used on The Ramones film Rock’n’Roll High school, Life on the Line and Thriller
At the beginning of 2022 the band started recording brand new songs for a forthcoming new Album titled ‘Guardians Of The Legacy’ slated for a November release. The first single from these sessions was ‘Guardians Of The Legacy’ which was released to Radio Stations in March 2022 and reached Number 2 on The Heritage Chart (only The Scorpions could keep them from number 1).
The second single called New Frontier made the top 5 on the Legacy Chart and climbs the Heritage Chart as this is written.( May 2022).
After 22 years together and hundreds of shows played all over the world Eddie & theHotRods remain one of the best and most exciting live bands around !
