Very original songs from the pen of Professor Paul Stenner ! The Doctors were formed as a fortunate amalgam of some scratch bands put together to play at our keyboard player David’s birthday ! All members were friends and had played together in various bands over the years. See the individual biogs for details.
The band was originally named The Doctors of Philosophy, to reflect the inordinately large number of Ph.Ds in the original line-up, but the name soon became trimmed down to something less unwieldy and pretentious!
The initial game plan was to play some songs in a loosely Americana style united by our love of artists such as Neil Young, Ray LaMontagne and the Grateful Dead amongst others.
The next catalytic event was Paul’s burgeoning confidence and increasingly prolific output as a songwriter.
A characteristic style soon emerged with Paul’s crystalline vocal delivery and incisive rhythm guitar complemented by David’s Hammond organ and John’s soaring country-rock guitar playing. All this by underpinned by the tight long-term rhythm partnership of Steve and Tom.
The result is startlingly original and melodic songs backed by a band of confident musicians that really rock but still understand the importance of light and shade.
As for the lyrics … don’t ask Paul to explain his lyrics unless you have a couple of hours to spare !
Is it Americana any more ..? .. almost certainly not ! ! But it is The Doctors !
